Frederick Clegg is obsessed with Miranda Gray. He is repressed, introverted and unloved. A collector of butterflies and a keen photographer. She is a beautiful, privileged art student. When Frederick wins the lottery he buys a remote farmhouse and abducts Miranda. Having imprisoned her in his cellar he discovers the reality is far from his fantasy. The play explores their tense, claustrophobic relationship. John Fowles’ classic novel on which this play is based, is a superb psychological thriller that is by turn sad, tense and horrific.
